Crawford Art Gallery presents ‘The Language of Dreams,’ an exhibition of works of art influenced by dreams and the unconscious. Featuring works from both public and private collections, the exhibition comprises over one hundred paintings and drawings, mainly by Irish artists from the mid to late 20th century. Among the artists represented are Patrick Hennessy, Colin Middleton, Nevill Johnson, Hilda Roberts and Mary Swanzy. Works by Giorgio de Chirico and Salvador Dali will represent the European context of Surrealism. But the main emphasis will be works of art created in Ireland from 1935 onwards, when the rise of Fascism prompted a response from those working within an ‘anti-establishment’ creative framework. Alongside ‘Language of Dreams’ will be an exhibition of photographic prints – ‘Surrealist Camera’ – by a pioneer of Surrealism, Roland Penrose.
