Living on the Atlantic coast in Mayo, the sea is a frequent presence in Hughie O’Donoghue’s painting. ‘The Memory of the Sea’, his exhibition at the Custom House Gallery, develops this connection to the water – long an attraction for painters – and presents a series of recent paintings that foreground the sea as the site of memory. O’Donoghue’s previous work has included meditations on shipwrecks, sea battles and coastal islands.
