Drawing on the Chester Beatty Library’s own collection, ‘Wicked Wit’ presents over one hundred hand-coloured 18th-century prints by Mary and Matthew Darly. Working from their studio in London’s Strand through the 1770s, the Darly’s were both artists and printmakers and their work became synonymous with the humorous images they produced featuring prominent politicians and socialites. From the time of their marriage, they worked in tandem designing, engraving, publishing, and marketing a variety of art works, supplies, and services.
